Music is one of the most important details at a wedding, and there’s nothing that gets your guests going like a good playlist! The songs you choose to play on your special day have the power to set the mood, bring the energy, and provide insight into your relationship. “It tells your story from the minute people walk in,” shares celebrity wedding and event planner, Mindy Weiss.

Meet the Expert

  • Mindy Weiss is a celebrity wedding and event planner based in Los Angeles, who has nearly 30 years of industry experience. Some of her clients consist of the Kardashian family, Justin and Hailey Bieber, and Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi. She’s also the author of three bestselling books: The Wedding Book, The Wedding Planner, and The Baby Keepsake Book and Planner.

There’s certainly a lot of pressure to pick the perfect soundtrack for your nuptials, which is why Weiss has partnered with Spotify to curate the ultimate wedding playlist featuring her top songs for anyone's big day. But before you start making assumptions, let us be the first to say that it isn't what you'd expect! “I’m always trying to find something new and innovative,” Weiss explains. “When I was making this list, I thought about what songs would be surprising.”

Instead of just featuring traditional romantic ballads, Weiss wanted to modernize wedding music. With a mix of classic tracks like “Your Song” by Elton John and current hits like “pov” by Ariana Grande, the playlist, "A Very Mindy Weiss Wedding"—available now on Spotify’s Wedding Season Hub—has something for everyone. From Frank Sinatra and Michael Bublé to Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber, the list of tracks cover every genre and appeals to every age group. The celeb planner even drew inspiration from the popular Netflix series Bridgerton and included Duomo’s “Wildest Dreams” on her list.

Since many of her song selections are instrumental or slower-paced with lyrics about love, the Los Angeles-based planner intends for couples to stream her playlist during their ceremony, first dance, or family dances. “There aren’t as many dance songs on here because I always recommend that you choose a band who plays a certain genre,” Weiss advises. “They have their repertoire, and we sprinkle in songs they must have.”

The creative whiz first reconsidered traditional wedding music choices when her son walked down the aisle to a rap song during his wedding in 2011. “We were sitting in the music meeting, and my child had no opinions until all of a sudden, he spoke up and said, ‘I’m going to walk down to “Regulate,”’ which is a rap song,” she recounts. “I was totally taken aback.”

Although the legendary planner was hesitant at first, she witnessed how one track transformed her son’s entire wedding. “It was incredible,” she shares. “He just personalized his wedding from that one song. People still talk about it.” That moment was instrumental in pushing Weiss to redefine her understanding of wedding music.

A lot of the important things that you talk about for years to come happen with music.

For couples who are eager to ditch tradition, but are unsure of what songs to play during their processional or special dances, Weiss recommends listening to a wide variety of music to figure out what strikes a chord. “Write down the songs you’re rocking out to, what makes you feel good or cry,” she encourages couples.

The best music evokes emotion, and Weiss kept that in mind when curating her playlist. Her hope is that these songs will inspire meaningful moments and create fond memories that couples will cherish forever. “A lot of the important things that you talk about for years to come happen with music,” she says. And we couldn't agree more!

If you’re looking for more inspiration, here are some of the top songs couples add to their wedding playlists on Spotify.
